two 6 hour sessions
In this hands-on class, students will explore sculptural form using cardboard as the primary armature, layered with encaustic (molten beeswax and damar resin) and an array of mixed media techniques. We'll cover basic encaustic application, surface manipulation, and how to build depth, texture, and structure using both traditional and unconventional materials.
Students will learn to:
Construct armatures and forms from recycled cardboard
Safely work with encaustic tools and materials
Combine wax with paper, fabric, wire, pigment, found objects, and other media
Create dynamic surface treatments including carving, embedding, and incising
This class is perfect for artists looking to expand their encaustic practice beyond the flat plane or for anyone curious about working dimensionally with tactile, layered materials. No prior encaustic experience is necessary—just a willingness to explore and play.
All materials provided, though students are encouraged to bring personal items or found objects to incorporate into their work.
