about

Kelly Austin-Rolo is a contemporary artist working primarily in encaustic.

She received her B.F.A. from Syracuse University. After living and working in New York City for 15 years, she moved to rural Duchess County, NY. and then to Lakeville, CT.

A recent transplant to Denver, Colorado, her work explores the natural world and our man-made landscapes and cityscapes. Kelly's cyclical process of creation to destruction, back to creation, allows her to play with the colors and wax, working their shapes over time, resulting in organic and harmonious forms.

I am inspired by the unending possibilities that creating with wax allows me. From building up...creating texture, to scraping and fusing with a torch and creating smooth, glass like surfaces, every day brings something new. I am constantly learning about this medium and all of the possibilities. I am intrigued by the fragile and durable qualities of wax as a medium. My work varies from striving to develop transparency and light from within to creating depth and texture.

My paintings, monotypes and mixed media pieces are my abstract interpretation of space and place.

My work speaks of the different ways in which these could be understood. Much of the focus of my work is hinged on the rural, urban and coastal landscapes that I have called home.

I often strive to create and target an abstract aerial (from above/plan/map) view of the urban juxtaposed with the random and chaotic colors and forms of nature.

My work is, quite often, about the looking in and observing and the looking out of spaces and places That said…I quite often start a painting and let the medium complement my direction.
